Costa Rica 2002

It all began as Molly and Matt's Magnificent Adventure.
Molly and Matt went to Costa Rica Late February 2002 for some intensive Spanish lessons, wildlife watching, and heat stroke training.  Molly kept the world appraised of her travels with a series of missives sent from a series of local Costa Rican Internet cafes.

They are (often) numbered #2, #3, #4, #5, #6.
No one knows why there is no #1.

Anyway, William and George went down late March to see what all the hubbub was about.
George often takes pictures, some are on this page and some are separated out into Flora, Fauna, and Hill Country.

This is a wonderful picture of Molly taken in Tortuguero.

"I said I never eat chicken, ya gotta believe me!".

This was just one of the delightful findings at an oasis of a hotel in Alajuela, Costa Rica, called Hotel Las Orquideas. They were great to our family and we heartily recommend them:

... or lizard spotting.  There were more reptilian critters than I know the names of.  I'll ask Matt.

Big picture here, but worth it.  This is a residence/shack built of whatever washed up on the beach.

Not all the life was wild.
It was fun setting up an amateur radio station there. dcp_1187.jpg (954254 bytes)
The 20M dipole hung as high as possible, one end the roof, the other a palm.  Good SWR on all bands except 15M, which would have been nice.  Traveling antennae are still an imperfect art.

The rest of the station: an FT-817, MFJ tuner, a little key, logbook, and a REX6000 for clock and sun-location chores.
3W can work the world.
Use lithium batteries, one set lasted for all the operating done at Poor Mans Paradise.

This is worth looking at.  This is the caldera of V. Poás.

Gorgeous sulfurous lake.
